I found this book while relaxing after a hard day of work at my office by surfing on the information superhighway.  Scanned it and think it is worth keeping.  Read it and see what you think.  It is about cancer, prevention of cancer and cancer industry politics.  I wish making money off of sick people weren’t so profitable.  Preventing cancer has to be a self-help job, no self-serving cancer treating professional will want to prevent the happening of such a cash cow for them.  May be I am too idealistic, I still think that doctoring and healing is a vocation not a business.  But if you know how to keep yourself healthy, you don’t have to rely on people who wants to make money off of your suffering.

A paper co-authored by Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and director of UC San Diego’s Statin Study group cites nearly 900 studies on the adverse effects of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), a class of drugs widely used to treat high cholesterol.

The result is a review paper, currently published in the on-line edition of American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, that provides the most complete picture to date of reported side effects of statins, showing the state of evidence for each. The paper also helps explain why certain individuals have an increased risk for such adverse effects.

“Muscle problems are the best known of statin drugs’ adverse side effects,” said Golomb. “But cognitive problems and peripheral neuropathy, or pain or numbness in the extremities like fingers and toes, are also widely reported.” A spectrum of other problems, ranging from blood glucose elevations to tendon problems, can also occur as side effects from statins. We all know pollution and toxins are bad for us. But the Environmental Working Group has conducted perhaps the deepest analysis of this issue on the most vulnerable demographic on the planet.  They looked at hundreds of chemicals in ten Americans and found that most of them harbored many chemicals in their bodies. These chemicals are linked to increase incidence of autism, cancer, early sexual development in children and other chronic diseases. The unborn are the most affected.  We need to look at how these man-made chemicals affect our health and how they affect the growth and development of the next generations.

In my practice, I recommend patients to do a detox program every 6-12 months to help reduce these chemical burden in our body. Today is the first day of Chinese New Year, (Kung Hay Fat Choi) it is spring in the Chinese calendar, according to Chinses tradition, it is the season of the Wood element, the energy of which affects the liver and gallbladder meridians, it is a good time to do a detox.  People also tend to have more gallbladder problems during the Spring. If you do have some gallbladder issues, may be a liver and gallbladder cleanse will help resolve them.

The FDA have launched an investigation into why the results of clinical trial linking the cholesterol drug Vytorin to increased risk of death from cancer were kept secret.

On Aug. 21 of last year, the FDA announced that it was launching an investigation into the possibility that Vytorin might increase a patient’s risk of contracting and dying from cancer. This came after the FDA was provided with the results of a study that found that patients taking Vytorin had a 40 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than those on a placebo. The study results were only shown to the FDA and had not been made public.Vytorin, the controversial cholesterol drug sold by Merck and Schering-Plough, failed to meet the main goal in another important study. What’s worse, the study also found that patients taking Vytorin in the study were more likely to develop cancer.

Vytorin, which was developed and marketed jointly by Merck and Schering-Plough, was approved for use by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004. Since it came on the market, Vytorin sales have reached $5 billion per year. Vytorin is a combination of cholesterol-lowering Zetia (ezetimibe) and the statin Zocor (simvastin). Statins like Zocor reduce the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver, while Zetia lessens the amount of cholesterol in food that is absorbed in the intestines.

The connection to cancer is only the latest serious health concern to arise for Vytorin. In December 2007, the FDA warned that a combination of Zetia and any statin, including simvastatin, places patients at increased risk of serious liver damage. Only two months later, the results of a large clinical trial of Vytorin were released, concluding that the drug provided no health benefit over simvastatin alone and might even worsen the buildup of arterial plaque. I have to shake my head reading this article on how an organization supposedly set up as an advocacy group for older citizens.  Seniors may think they save money when they buy AARP insurance, but if they take the trouble to compare competing products, they may be paying twice as much.

AARP brought in nearly half a billion dollars in 2007 from fees insurers pay for AARP endorsement. It also gained about $40 million from holding the clients’ premiums for a month and investing them.

The revenue helps pay down the $200 million bond debt that funded the organization’s brass and marble headquarters in Washington, D.C.—which is closed to visitors, purportedly so staff can work.

Royalties and fees now constitute about 43% of AARP’s revenue, up from 11% in 1999.

AARP lobbied against Bush’s proposed overhaul of Social Security, and for the Medicare prescription drug benefit. When Part D medicare drug “benefit” passed, AARP was able to expand its contract with UnitedHealth Group, which underwrites its Medicare supplemental insurance plan.

“I was kind of shocked,” said one member, who found out he was paying $1,079 more for his AARP auto insurance than he would have paid for a Mutual of Omaha policy. “They’re making money on the backs of old people”

May be I am a dreamer, but Dr. Paul makes so much sense to me that I am wondering why there are not more people supporting him.  How far do we have to fall before we wake up?  We are embracing the same big government that our founding fathers fought so hard to break off from. Where are the individualism, independance and self-sufficiency?
