There really is a way to reverse type 2 diabetes and greatly improve blood sugar control and reduce insulin use in type 1 diabetes. Controlling insulin production is the key to prolong life, reduce complications and improve wellbeing in people suffering from diabetes. I’m not talking about just masking symptoms with drugs or controlling blood sugar with insulin injections, I’m talking about an outright elimination of the condition.
Diabetes is one of the most expensive diseases to manage. The complications of diabetes are severe. About half of all limb amputations in
America are caused by diabetes. Researchers estimate that one third of the babies born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes. Although reversing diabetes is considered extremely difficult in conventional medical thinking, it’s actually not hard at all. And far simpler than the medical doctors even realize. In fact, a study led by Christian Roberts of the University of California, Los Angeles showed that Type 2 diabetes can be reversed in 3 weeks solely via diet and lifestyle changes. (Diabetes Res Clin Pract. 2006 Sep;73(3):249-59. Epub 2006 Apr 17.) 50% of study participants were declared free of diabetes after the conclusion of the 3-week program! That study shocked most medical doctors, but it didn’t surprise me to say the least. I have seen some of my diabetic patients overcame their condition and attained normal fasting blood sugar as well as HbA1C results in a very short time just by dietary changes, plus simple nutritional supplementation and exercises. Here are some common questions people asked about diabetes:
1. What is diabetes? Diabetes is actually a metabolic disorder, not a disease. It is caused by the way we eat. That is why it can only be reversed by diet—the proper whole-food diet that our ancestors used to eat.
2. What foods cause diabetes? Most commercially prepared foods contain diabetes-causing ingredients: refined sugar, refined flours, trans fatty acid, synthetic vitamin additives, and chemical additives. Do you know that white flour contains a diabetes-promoting contaminant called alloxan? Alloxan is a drug used to create diabetic mice in the laboratory. It is also used as a bleaching agent in white flour. It can destroy beta cells in the pancreas. Eating commercial refined flour products which contain all of these harmful ingredients are a sure way to increase your risk for diabetes. 3. Can I treat diabetes without drugs? Absolutely! Studies after studies have proven that nutrition and exercise can reverse diabetes. Incorporate powerful, disease-fighting foods and herbs into every meal will improve your odds, free-range animal protein, organic vegetables, cinnamon, Gymnema, coleus and fish oil are just a few to start. Few people know many foods actually stabilize your blood sugar swings as well as sensitize insulin receptors without drugs. 4. If nutrition makes such a difference, why aren’t diabetes doctors know about it and diabetes organizations doing more to promote nutrition to alleviate the mass sufferings? These so-called “disease groups” are more interested in managing diabetes (i.e. keeping patients sick) than actually curing it. The money is found in managing diseases rather than curing them. Healthy people won’t go to doctors or need any drugs. Most of these groups are actually supported by the drug companies that stand to make billions by selling their drugs. The financial conflicts of interest is mind numbing that diabetes groups accept millions of dollars each year from pharmaceutical and junk food companies that sell insulin and other drugs. The American Diabetes Association took millions from the world’s manufacturers of candy and sodas! Ostensibly, the ADA claimed that they endorsed only the non-sugar products of these companies. 5. Can diabetes be linked to other diseases? The same harmful ingredients found in processed foods that cause diabetes also contribute to other diseases such as cancer, heart disease, depression, esthma, and arthritis. They also link to gallstones, appendicitis, poor digestion and periodontal diseases, and accelerated aging and many other degenerative diseases. In fact, there is a common link for all chronic degenerative diseases to the way we have been eating in the last 100 years in the western world. 6. Should type 2 diabetic use insulin? It is absolutely harmful for type 2 diabetic to use insulin. Their problem is due to insulin resistance. They usually can produce plenty of insulin, but have problem at the cellular receptors level. Their receptors won’t respond to insulin. By overwhelming the system with increased exogenous insulin may help control blood sugar for a short time, but will cause the severe complications to accelerate because insulin is a damaging chemical to the vasculature. It is important to know how simple dietary changes can eliminated insulin injections for majority of diabetics and quickly restore insulin receptor sensitivity with dietary change and exercise. Diabetics should avoid all starchy carbohydrates and even fruits until their blood sugar and insulin are under control. For type 1 diabetics, the avoidance of starchy carbs and fruits is forever in order for them to attain tight blood glucose control and avoid complications. 7. What vitamins, minerals and herbs are beneficial for diabetics? B complex, vitamin C and all fat soluble vitamins are important for proper function of the body. The one trace mineral that’s almost always missing from the diets of diabetics is Chromium. Chromium is a co-factor in glucose tolerance factor which is important for the proper functioning of insulin. Other important minerals are selenium, vanadium, magnesium, zinc and potassium. Many of these minerals are lacking in processed and commercially grown foods, Trace minerals are in general very low in our chemical farmed produce. Herbs such as cinnamon, Gymnema, coleus, and Siberian ginseng have blood glucose normalizing property. 8. Should diabetics take fish oil? It is absolutely essential for diabetics to take omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are important for proper insulin receptor functions. Take about 1000mg of DHA and EPA combined on a daily basis to insure adequacy. Normally eating fatty cold-water ocean fish is a good way to obtain omega-3 fat, however, this source is contaminated with mercury and other heavy metals, caution should be exercised to limit eating of sea food to once a week at most. Cod liver oil is probably the best form of fish oil since it delivers a good dose of vitamin D and vitamin A. Both are important for the immune systems as well many other metabolic functions of the body. Choose fish oil with their mercury removed. If you’re currently suffering from type 1 or 2 diabetes or other blood sugar disorders such as hypoglycemia, Syndrome X, insulin resistance or hyperinsulinemia that can lead to diabetes, don’t despair. These conditions are not diseases. Diabetes is not a disease. It can be reversed by proper dietary changes and other healthy lifestyle modifications. Imagine a life without insulin shots, insulin pumps and without lancing fingertips every day to monitor your blood glucose level. Imagine not having to spend tens of thousands of dollars on insulin, diabetes drugs, and diabetic supplies. Imagine having healthy vision and functioning fingers and legs and toes that stay attached to your body. Envision never have to be attach to a kidney dialysis machine. Imagine a long healthy productive life. The feeling of a healthy long life is much greater than the taste of refined processed foods in your mouth. Think about that.
