Question: Is Stevia Safe?
There are some concern over the safty of stevia inspite of numerous studies and traditional uses that confirmed its safety. Based on a few studies, researchers found when rats were fed LARGE amount of stevia extract, some pathological changes that might indicate that they became infertile. Therefore, WHO, EU and the FDA all agree not to allow stevia to be used as a sweeteners in their respective juridictions. That got me thinking. The studies that led to the approval of aspartame (Nutrasweet) and sucralose (Splenda) were much more flimsy and yet they are approved. In fact, FDA scientists kept aspartame out of the market for over ten years. Until some slick political maneuver that overturned the safety net of the FDA (It has been turn up-side-down ever since) and aspartame slipped into the market. I think if stevia is approved as a sweetener, that will totally dry up the market for the other artificial sweeteners, that will be very bad for business (as usual.)
By the way, we really should stop drinking water because it can cause water intoxication and death. Did we hear the report of a women died of that conditon recently? Well, you can see this is a joke. Even good things, overdosed, can cause harm.
We should not over use any substance in the first place especially any concentrated form of chemicals be it natural or man-made. We will certainly can get into trouble if we use a very large amount of refined stevia extract long term. But if we only use it occasionally to sweeten a cup of tea or two, there will definitely be no problem. I have been using stevia extract since it was available in the US back in the late 80’s. I have not found it to be a problem. I am not using a lot of it either. We can all learn to use some common sense. Stevia is certainly much safer than white sugar and artificial sweetners.
